Student-run, student-supported WUSC沙巴app下载 has been sponsoring refugee scholars since 1986

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ most recent report, 被迫逃离冲突的人数, 暴力, human rights violations and persecution has now surpassed 100 million 这是第一次 on record. 这个数字的, over 26 million are refugees – people who have crossed international borders to find safety -- another tragic milestone.

Manyang Lual Jok crossed the stage on McGill’s lower campus to collect his BA in Computer Science and Economics during Spring Convocation, A native of 南苏丹, Jok fled his war-torn homeland when he was nine years old.

(WUSC) – has sponsored over 60 student refugees to resettle in Canada and pursue their education at McGill. WUSC沙巴app下载 is in full preparation to welcome eight new scholars this fall, 包括, 这是第一次, 两名阿富汗学者.

WUSC沙巴app下载 is a student-run club of the Students’ Society of 沙巴app下载大学 that provides a year of full financial sponsorship, 集成的援助, 还有一个支持的社区. The program is funded through a $4 levy collected from all McGill students every semester based on student referendum,

“The SRP is unique because this peer-to-peer resettlement is not the regular pathway that the government uses to resettle refugees,爱丽丝Ishimwe说, 沙巴app下载大学学生难民项目协调员. “I’ve been invited to speak in other countries and they don’t have programs like this where youth are doing what organizations and governments usually do.”

World University Service of Canada is a non-profit organization that fosters youth-centered solutions for improved education, 经济, and empowerment opportunities to overcome inequality and exclusion in countries across Asia, 非洲和美洲.

Local Committees operate on five pillars: academic integration; social integration; health and well-being; financial support; and self-reliance. WUSC works with over 100 Canadian universities, colleges, and CEGEPs to bring scholars to Canada.

“WUSC scholars are resettled as single adults and leave all family behind, 在庇护国, 在加拿大开始新生活,”Ishimwe说, who just earned her Bachelor of Social Work from McGill and will start her Masters of Social Work in the fall. “The financial support includes everything from housing (they usually stay in Residence), 学费, 书, 笔记本电脑, 手机, 冬天的衣服——甚至是沙巴app下载的赃物.”

WUSC沙巴app下载 is literally there the moment the new scholars set foot in Montreal. “沙巴体育APP在机场迎接每一个新来的人, 每个人都举着欢迎的牌子,穿着巫协的蓝色t恤,”Ishimwe说. “对沙巴体育APP所有人来说,这绝对是最激动人心的时刻.”

“通常, the scholars know very little about 沙巴app下载大学 or the members of the Local Committee set to welcome them,”她说. “在最初的日子里, we take them to their residence rooms and mobilize LC members to show them everything,”她说. “Campus tours, meet their professors and academic advisors – all before classes start.”

当Jok, 最近的毕业生, stepped off the plane at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport in 2017, 他22岁,身在一个陌生的国家,没有一个朋友. “太可怕了,”他承认.

但这种情况很快就会改变.

The WUSC沙巴app下载 students who met him at the airport were the “very first people I met in Canada and they were also some of the nicest people I’ve ever met,”Jok说.

During his undergrad years, Jok himself became very involved with the McGill WUSC committee. 新生到达机场的时间, he was one of the people there to greet them and make them feel at home.

“It’s such a humbling experience [meeting new-comers at the airport],” he says. “It brings me back to my first day in Canada – which is one of those memories that I will always hold dear.”

Alone in a new country and apart from their friends and family many new arrivals are overwhelmed. 为了缓解过渡, 沙巴app下载大学组织社会活动(滑冰, 打保龄球, picnics) and ensures each scholar has a phone or laptop to be able to communicate with people back home.

. “如果可能的话, we arrange to prepare traditional meals from their home countries – be it Kenya, 马拉维, 布隆迪, 黎巴嫩, 叙利亚人, 南苏丹, 或者索马里. 这都是适应环境的一部分.”

“We feel like this is the best model for us to integrate peers because it’s not someone in an office telling them what to do,”她说. “和你一起去上课的是你的同事, 和你在自助餐厅吃饭, 和你一起去买冬季夹克. 没有太大的权力不平衡.”

快速学习者

Ishimwe很快就指出了这一点, while simple things that we take for granted – like paying a phone bill – can be confusing for new scholars at first, 没过多久,它们就开始开花了.

“别忘了, they have gone through a very competitive selection process to part of the WUSC program. These are very skilled students who were selected from the top schools of their camps,”她说. “They are experts in navigating McGill and Montreal in just a few months.

“通常, previous scholars take on leadership roles in the Local Committee to support future cohorts through the experience they lived through themselves”

She notes that WUSC “graduates” are spread around the world: working for tech companies in the US; occupying great roles in the Canadian government; doing international work in Europe

“We should think of WUSC as a way to bring talented community members here,”她说. “These scholars are brilliant and they add to the diversity of McGill and Canada with the richness of their intellect and of their cultures. 沙巴体育APP都因此变得更好.”
